Flicks for the loved and the lonely

For the Loved:

Crazy, Stupid, Love” is something  both guys and girls can enjoy on Valentine’s Day. The movie contains an all-star cast consisting of Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone and Julianne Moore, which makes for a great movie. The movie is about a middle-aged man, Cal (Carell), who is going through a midlife crisis after his wife (Moore) asks for a divorce. With Jacob’s (Gosling) help, Cal becomes a womanizer while trying to find his “manhood” again. For guys, the dynamic between the smooth-talking Jacob and an awkward Cal is hilarious. For girls, Gosling’s sexy and charming attitude will definitely make you swoon. Through all the crazy antics and laughs, there’s an overall tone of love and the crazy things we do for it. This romantic comedy is a sweet and unpredictable movie that will make for a cheap and easy date night.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” is a mind-boggling film that says no matter what, true love will always prevail. This movie focuses on relationships and the things we do to avoid the pain they cause. How many times have we wanted to forget the memory of an ex? Especially if the memory of them keeps us from moving on? Well, the couple in this movie does just that. Joel (Jim Carrey) and Clementine (Kate Winslet) play a couple in a dysfunctional relationship that undergoes an experimental procedure, erasing their memories of each other, just to end up meeting and falling in love again. This movie will entertain and provide for an excellent choice when deciding what to do today.

For the Loveless:

Blue Valentine” is probably one of the most depressing love stories ever. If you’re looking for a movie that will make you happy you are single and not in relationship on Valentine’s Day, this is it. In this film, Dean (Ryan Gosling) falls for a girl named Cindy (Michelle Williams). In the beginning, it is a classic romance movie: boy meets girl, boy faces obstacle with girl, then boy and girl fall in love and live happily ever after. But this movie takes you past “happily ever after,” and what you get isn’t pretty. The burden that a long-term relationship can be is perfectly depicted in this film. It shows that no matter how hard you work or how much you give up to be with the your partner, love can be fickle and leave you emotionally damaged and clinically depressed forever.

500 Days of Summer” pulled a great bait and switch on audiences when it was released. They cast indie darlings Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt as a couple, and the posters and ads made it look like a cutesy romantic comedy starring two cutesy people being all cutesy. What it actually ended up being is a semi-depressing story about how sometimes love doesn’t last. The film flip-flops between scenes of their relationship’s early days and scenes of the end of their relationship as it slowly falls apart. This movie is more truthful than your average romantic comedy because it doesn’t shy away from the pain of when a relationship stops being fresh and starts to go sour.
