Report needed more "No" quotesI am writing to compliment you on most of your coverage of the Beach Legacy Referendum this past week or so. This was and will continue to be an important issue for the campus to decide. Particularly essential were the questions your reporting raised about the conduct of the online election. Let's hope that Cal State Long Beach can run a better election than Palm Beach County, Florida!I was, ther...

I've come to read hundreds of articles each year about the abuse of foreign teenagers in the United States.Rarely do I come across a writer who writes with such true grit, truth and accuracy as Jean Kim accomplished in her, ‘Foreign students made sex slaves' appearing in the March 3 issue of the Daily Forty-Niner. We intend to share her piece with our international media contacts in more than 65 countries with a speci...

‘Radical Islam' article insultingI am appalled and insulted at the breadth of the presumptions in Becky Yeh's article in the March 9 issue of the Daily Forty-Niner.Yeh claims, "Radical Islamic protesters have rallied in streets, holding signs saying ‘Freedom go to hell' and ‘be prepared for the real Holocaust.'" Nowhere does she cite where or when this took place. These are bold inflammatory words that sho...

Is the Beach Legacy Referendum really self-explanatory? Who does this referendum benefit? The answer is obvious; it will mainly profit Cal State Long Beach athletes. However, whose pockets will this affect? The BLR will distress everyone currently enrolled or planning to enroll. How many are prepared to pay a fee increase? I doubt that everyone is in outstanding condition at this time to pay for something not everyone will ...

ASSA went wrong way with protest I am a student at Cal State Long Beach, and am half white (Irish) and half African American. I was appalled at what I saw on the front page of the Daily Forty-Niner on Wednesday, Feb. 25.Claiming that the California State University system is racist because of low black enrollment at CSULB — with no percentages included except the ones from CSULB — is absolutely ludicrous. If you pr...

Marijuana prohibition has done little other than burden millions of otherwise law-abiding citizens with criminal records. The University of Michigan's Monitoring the Future Study reports that lifetime use of marijuana is higher in the United States than any European country, yet America is one of the few Western countries that use its criminal justice system to punish citizens who prefer marijuana to martinis. The short-term healt...

Our View – L.A. kicking the jalapeño out of taco trucks

May 13, 2008

For the last week, the mood has been somber and reflective in the Daily Forty-Niner newsroom. Editors and reporters have spent what should be minutes of productivity grieving, sharing and coping with what...

Letter to the Editor – Students need university preparation, need to speak

In the Sept. 11 issue of the Daily Forty-Niner, Krystle Ralston's column "Professors need to be more understanding", I just have one problem with Ms. Ralston's well-written article on the idea that college professors need to be more understanding of students' needs - she is completely wrong. She puts forth the idea that teachers are "pushing and shoving" students to be more vocal in class, like they are in a mosh pit and un...
