Raw, raunchy and ridiculously hilarious

A lone microphone sat in the center of the well-lit stage, and all eyes focused on the platform as the show began.

The Long Beach Laugh Factory hosted an “All-Star Comedy” show starring Joey Diaz, Grant Cotter and the host Tiffany Haddish.

Joey Diaz, a stand-up comedian and actor best known for his roles on the TV series “My Name is Earl” and the movie “The Longest Yard,” was the headliner of the evening. He said that after he went to prison at an early age, he realized that comedy would be his life.

“Once I got into comedy, I knew that this was it,” Diaz said. “It had to work because otherwise I would have become a criminal full time.”

His performance included up-to-date material ranging from the Ebola epidemic, Isis, marijuana and much more.

Diaz described stand-up as “the hardest, easiest thing you can ever do … it’s my therapy.”

Grant Cotter, a stand-up comedian known for his performances on Funny or Die’s Oddball Comedy Festival also performed. He has performed at the The Nugget Grill and Pub on campus a few times in the past.

His comedy is extremely fast-paced and to the point. He poked fun at topics like Netflix, the ‘90s and having a girlfriend.

The best advice Cotter had for college students was to not take yourself too seriously because “even the biggest comics are just as neurotic and anxious” as everyone else. He also advised to be nice to everyone and work hard when you get out of college.

“A lot of success comes from the people you know and the relationships you make, so always be nice to everyone. Don’t be a d-k,” Cotter said.

Tiffany Haddish, a stand-up comedian, actress, dancer and self-proclaimed unicorn, was the host of the evening. She spent half of the show dancing across the stage, and she told a variety of jokes including some about doggy style, clubbing, her love for white boys and smoking weed.

Haddish said her favorite thing about being a comedian is “writing and creating something that would influence people and change [people’s] lives … it doesn’t take super knowledge to touch someone’s heart.”

Growing up, Haddish dealt with a lot of tragedy. She found her happiness in making others laugh. “I try to find the funny in everything [because] every scenario, no matter what it is, even if it’s the most tragic thing, there’s a blessing in it somewhere,” Haddish said.

Each comedian had the room laughing throughout the night with their personal comedic styles.

The Long Beach Laugh Factory will host Diaz every month for “Joey Diaz Deathsquad Wednesdays,” starting Oct. 8.
