The dim-lighted room made it almost impossible to see; however, the screams of people trying to talk to each other made it clear that they were nearby. The music that played boomed and shattered people's eardrums. This night was like any other night at a concert in a small venue.
Eighteen senior graphic design students from Cal State Long Beach hosted a benefit concert at the Blue Café on Friday to raise money for their upcoming show in December.
"It's a wide variety of people," senior graphic designer Julian Jones-Pittman said. "Graphic design is kind of a broad term. We've got people who are on the illustration side, people who are more like architects and people who are more into typography, like fonts. We each bring our own little game to the table."
Students who came to the event cheered and supported their colleagues.
"I came out to support the graphic design students that are hosting this benefit concert," Kim said. "It's nice to go out on a weekend to support my fellow students and just to see a concert that's not expensive to get into."
Students and supporters, who were over 21-years-old, were able to buy drinks and student-made merchandise. Performers included Thy Squid, No Hablo, Squarefish Golden Afternoon, and DJ Ninja Loving came out to the tiny venue to perform at the benefit concert.
"I'm really excited to see the bands," senior illustration major Rea Kim said. "I heard they're local bands, and I want to hear different types of music here."
Attendees could not escape the "Opposites Attract" theme for the night. With sounds from the heavy bass thumps of dubstep to the light strumming of ukulele folk music, patrons were in the middle of a mixture of different sounds, sights and feelings.
There was a mixture of people bunching together. Some people looked like they were ready to go to an elegant charity event. Others took a simpler route and dressed ready to go bar hopping. However, it was all a part of the theme of the night. This was a night where two different sides met to make something great.
The student artists who put on the concert will have another event from Dec. 9 to Dec. 11 at the MADhaus Gallery where they will put their works of art on display.
