Facebook's latest update includes many new features that have potential to make both Twitter and Google+ obsolete.
The first major change that the website made was the integration of the "top news" feature with the regular news feed. The top news feed chooses posts that it thinks will be most interesting to users and groups them together.
Facebook has also added a subscription feature, which is similar to the "follow" function on Twitter. Users can personalize how much information, and from which friends, they get on their pages. Subscriptions to someone's most important updates, or all their updates, are also available, as well as the option to unsubscribe from certain users all together.
Facebook has also installed a "lists" feature, which closely mirrors Google+'s "circles" function. Users can now choose friends to read certain posts by selecting them to be in specific lists. This helps with privacy and can separate professional colleagues from personal friends.
A separate feed in the top right corner of the page has also been added to provide a constant live stream of everything friends are doing on Facebook.
"It makes me uncomfortable," said Luke Choate, senior electrical engineering major at Cal State Long Beach. "Every time I look over to the right side of the page, I feel like I'm stalking somebody."
Average Facebook users are outraged at the changes, and are demanding that the website change back to the way it was. However, some argue against that.
"Facebook has everyone hooked," said Ryan Gardner, CSULB senior electrical engineering major. "No matter what they do, nobody is going to leave because there is not a better alternative."
