Art and music blending together is not a new idea. However, it still continues to be a popular way to attract the masses. It is exciting and fun when art and music come together because they both stir the imagination. You can get lost in your own fantasy world when you put these two together.
The Cal State Long Beach graphic design graduating class of Fall 2011 will host a benefit concert at The Blue Café in Downtown Long Beach on Friday. The money that the students receive that Friday will not only go to the venue and the bands, but also to the students producing the concert in hopes of raising enough money for their gallery show, which will take place from Dec. 9 to the 11.
People who will go to Friday's event will notice an "Opposites Attract" theme around the venue.
The 18 artists said that they chose "Opposites Attract" as their theme this year because, "For the 18 of us as a collective, opposites really do attract," according to their Facebook page. "From our nationalities to our personalities and to our design styles, we're a mixed bag of opposites that somehow work wonderfully together."
Attendees can look forward to listening to bands rocking on stage while looking at the students' hand-made merchandise that they have to offer.
Julian Jones-Pittman is one of the student artists that will be in attendance and selling merchandise. He said that people going should look forward to buying shirts that are printed onsite and some keychain trinkets with their logos on them.
Items sold at the event will range from cell phone charms for $2 to graphic tees for $10.
Jones-Pittman said that the artists wanted to do a show that was separate from the ones they do on campus.
"Since most of us live in Downtown Long Beach, we came up with the idea to do a show in that area," Jones-Pittman said. "One of the artists, Clay Cooper, knows a band and thought they should combine forces with us. That is how we created this event." He continued to say that people who want to go should not just go for the art and music, but should also go to enjoy the scene that Downtown Long Beach has to offer.
Attendees must be 21 or over to get into the venue. There will be alcohol served, so people can enjoy a cocktail of their choosing as they shuffle on the dance floor.
A wide variety of music will play that evening with sounds ranging from folk to dubstep. Performers will include Thy Squid, No Hablo, Squarefish, Golden Afternoon and DJ Ninja Loving. Attendees can get their groove on with the simple sounds of guitar strumming, the aggressive tones of drum bashing, or the deep, sultry bass tones of a synthesizer.
Students participating in the event have already been recognized in the artistic world. This past spring, some students went to New York to participate in the One Show College Competition to create a new logo for an organization. The group that flew there and participated came in second place.
The graphic design program at CSULB is competitive two-year program. Interested students need to submit a portfolio with six to 10 pieces of their best work.
Friday's benefit show will start at 8 p.m. and tickets will be $5 at the door.
