ASI Senate meeting

After observing a lack of necessary services on lower campus — like a supply store and decent food — ASI Senators voted weeks ago to approve the Consumer Services Initiative to study what areas of the campus need improvement.

At Wednesday’s meeting, ASI Treasurer Brian Troutner said the Senate failed to contact other departments of the university that are already working to improve services on campus before passing an initiative. He questioned how the formation of an ad-hoc committee, made from the initiative, would be working with the USU board of trustees and Forty-Niner Shops Inc., if neither of these entities had been informed of the resolution.

Vice President Christopher Chavez said the intentions were never to step on other departments’ toes, but that the Senate wanted to participate in making the campus a better place by working in conjunction with other student committees representing the USU board of trustees and the 49er Shops, Inc.

Although the Senate can only make suggestions and not put anything into action, Chavez said it would best to unify the efforts.

The Senate is currently working on a resolution to oppose the 2009-2010 budget cuts that would force the USU board of trustees to increase student fees and reduce financial aid. This resolution also calls on students to take action by attending rallies, like the one scheduled for Monday at noon, and signing petitions opposing the proposed budget cuts.

The Senate briefly discussed the resolution that could promote awareness of where non-smoking areas are on campus. Senators questioned what enforcement would be defined in regards to the resolution and agreed that more work needs to be done before the resolution is voted on.
