Rags 2 Rhythms Hip Hop Fashion Show dances its way to campus

The University Student Union Program Council is hosting their ninth annual Rags 2 Rhythms Hip Hop fashion show today at the USU Ballrooms.

The platform is already set up and models have been rehearsing trying to perfect their looks. The show is expected to have at least 500 people in attendance. Last year’s show was so popular that people weren’t able to get tickets.

This fashion show caters to underground lines in that most of the clothing lines aren’t funded enough to mass-produce. The creators of these lines are given the opportunity to promote their clothing line through this show to hopefully be noticed by potential sponsors.

“We had 25 designers fill out the application [and] 15 were selected,” said Tristan Wynn, the executive director and producer of this year’s show. “We looked for the designers that had the most unique style and that stood out.”

Wynn was also one of the judges who selected the models for the show. There were about 200 models that auditioned, with only 60 selected to participate.

“We looked at their modeling style and the way they walk,” Wynn said.

Kiona Roberts, a psychology major, will be participating in her first fashion. Roberts will be wearing 3 different designer outfits.

Roberts auditioned on the first day. “There were about 160 models that audition,” Roberts said. “I was scared because the models that went first didn’t make it,” said Roberts regarding the auditions.

Ron Gates, 24, heard about the auditions through the Internet. Gates has been in three other fashion shows. This is the first time that he is participating in the Rags 2 Rhythms fashion show. When asked how the auditions went Roberts said, “this audition was different there were cameras.”

Candice Carter, a kinesiology major, has been helping out in anything she possibly can do. “I was the choreographer for the runway, and also one of the judges,” Carter said. “The fashion show is a great opportunity for everyone.”

During the fashion show there will be merchandise for sell. The show starts at 7 p.m.
