Student wins $3,120 as part of ASI contest

He sweat it out all semester at the Student Recreation and Wellness Center and now Kurt Lang, a sophomore biology major, doesn’t have to sweat over how to pay for spring tuition.

He won $3,120 in free tuition for completing the Owen’s Condition for Tuition program at the SRWC. Lang was selected as the grand prize winner on Thursday at the Condition for Tuition Winter Wonderland party, which was held at the SRWC plaza at Cal State Long Beach from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Lang said he was excited to win free tuition for a semester.

“I didn’t think I was going to win,” Lang said.

He also encouraged other students to give the program a try next time.

“Just keep trying and eventually something good will happen,” he said.

Lang’s favorite part of the program was taking spin classes because they played really pumped up music and the workout was difficult.

Students who completed the Condition for Tuition program in the fall semester, by earning 30 points for participating in different fitness categories at the SRWC, were all eligible to win free tuition and other prizes.

Thirty-three prizes were given away to program participants throughout the evening, including prize bags with assorted goodies, Polar heart rate monitors, travel trainers, SRWC summer memberships and 3G bikes.

Josh Owen, CEO of Owen’s Trimodal in Long Beach, sponsored the tuition prize. In a speech before the grand prize winner was announced, Owen said, “We were really honored to be a part of it and we look forward to being involved with the program in the future.”

Owen went on to say that students should learn healthy habits now because it only gets harder after graduation.

“Teaching yourself these really good habits early on is just fantastic,” said Owen, who swims at the SRWC pool several times a week.

The Condition For Tuition Winter Wonderland party was planned by the SRWC and the ASI special events commission.
