CSULB makes Princeton Review’s 2013 ‘Best in the West’ list

Despite statewide budget cuts and an uncertain financial future, Cal State Long Beach was named as one of Princeton Review’s ‘Best in the West’ colleges of 2013.

CSULB was one of 121 colleges in the Western U.S. that was recognized by the Princeton Review.

“It is always good to know that we rank very well, especially when it comes to value for dollar,” CSULB President F. King Alexander said via email.

According to Princeton Review’s website, universities were selected for the list after its students and administrators were interviewed.

CSULB is described on Princeton Review’s profile as “very large and diverse” and “affordable to virtually everyone,” and was one of four Cal State Universities to be awarded the title.

Cal State East Bay, Cal State San Bernardino and Cal State Stanislaus were also acknowledged as “Best in the West.”

“Cal State Long Beach has been consistently recognized by The Princeton Review as a ‘Best in the West’ campus since about 2006,” CSULB Spokesman Rick Gloady said.

For many students, like freshman mechanical engineering major Michael Tocco, CSULB’s “Best in the West” status is seen as an honor.

“Too often colleges are seen as painstakingly expensive,” Tocco said. “CSULB is truly the best in the west, combining an array of outstanding professors and advanced academics.”

CSULB has also been nationally recognized by “U.S. News and World Report” and “The Education Trust” in recent years.

“The primary mission of the university is to serve students and help them succeed,” Gloady said. “It would seem that the university, its faculty, staff and administrators are fulfilling that primary mission.”
