Suspicious package a dud

A suspicious package prompted a partial evacuation of the Beach Hut and Academic Services building yesterday.

According to University Police Sergeant Keith Caires, police received the call from Beach Hut staff at 1:13 p.m and were dispatched to the scene.

Caires said that the officers turned their radios off, to ensure that no radio frequency could possibly detonate the package, if possible.

While investigating, police performed an evacuation of all students and staff in the AS building who were in a “direct line of sight to the package.”

During the event, a student came to claim the suspicious package.

The package belonged to senior communications major Jon Nguyen. Nguyen said the package was a present for someone in his fraternity and that he had left it at the Beach Hut after eating lunch.

Nguyen said he later realized he had forgotten the package and was shocked to find that the University Police had closed off the Beach Hut. Nguyen’s package was a shoebox wrapped in cardboard paper.

At 2:01 p.m., University Police began to remove the caution tape.
