ASI creates position to represent international students

There will be a new student government position available for representing and advising international students.

Associated Students Inc. passed a resolution Wednesday that will move to create a secretary position for international student affairs.

The position may only last for one year, as a decision to re-organize student government is pending. If the decision goes through, ASI will be reorganized on July 1, 2017. Senator Fatima Hasan, author of the bill, intends to establish a trend that will stick when and if the reorganization happens.

“From what Senator Fatima said, this position is in dire need,” Internal Assistant Director Lindsay San Miguel said.

“You look at international students and they’re up against a pretty big ordeal. One year is a good start.”

At the same meeting, Student Health Services representative Heidi Girling announced it will administer an anonymous health survey by email early next week.

The survey, titled National College Health Assessment and created by the American College Health Association, will assess health related issues like alcoholism, drug use and violence. The survey will also assess campus attitudes around sexual assault in order to indicate what the campus can do to be more survivor friendly and improve prevention and awareness education.
