An Associated Students Inc. resolution opposing a federal bill written to eliminate government funding to organizations like Planned Parenthood passed its third reading.

Following a heated debate that occurred during its second reading, the resolution passed with only one vote against and five abstentions on March 23.

Several senators discussed the matter with their respective constituencies before deciding their vote.

"The response is overwhelmingly positive," Sen. Jacob Rice said after presenting the resolution to engineering students. "The vast majority of us are in favor."

Senator Alexandro Gracia also received a favorable reaction from the College of Business Administration.

"The majority of them did approve as well," Gracia said.

After hearing passionate speeches by two activists — one pro-choice and one pro-life — Sen. Roxana Gracia took the time to remind everyone that the issue was not about abortion, but rather about college students having access to the resources they need.

ASI remains neutral on abortion.

Despite its winning vote, the resolution proved to be one of the most controversial of the year.
