Bookstore bandit
University Bookstore employee Vaiilili Emosi, 21, was arrested on Aug. 4 for stealing an estimated $5,000 from the bookstore. She had been reportedly accumulating the amount since January 2009 by avoiding certain transactions and then pocketing the money. Another employee reported the theft after she saw suspicious handling of the money while she was cashing out, University Police Captain Fernando Solorzano said.
Books 4 pennies
Geoffrey Nielson, 36, non-student, reportedly stole five textbooks who's combined value was estimated at $772 from the University Bookstore on Aug. 12. He then sold the textbooks at Bucks 4 Books on Atherton Street and Palo Verde Avenue for $216, according to Solorzano.
Lesson learned
University Police cited 17-year-old Luis Galicia for driving without a driver's license while he was in Parking Structure 3. He was reportedly waiting to pick up his girlfriend when University Police approached him about a suspicious person's report. Galicia has a learner's permit, which requires him to drive with a licensed driver over the age of 25. His vehicle was impounded.
Crappy artist
A male suspect has reportedly vandalized two restrooms on campus, writing the word "Carmvey" with purple paint on the inside of the toilet stall walls. The first-floor restroom in the College of Business Administration building is currently heavily vandalized with etchings on the mirrors and markings on several seat-cover dispensers, even though, the purple graffiti has been painted back to its original color. The vandalized handicap stall in the first-floor men's restroom of the Molecular and Life Sciences Center has also been painted over. University Police has forwarded the case to investigation, asking the Long Beach Police Department's gang unit to analyze the graffiti.
Hinge hinders thief
Student James Yano reported an attempted burglary after he saw that a pin had been removed from the door hinge in the Molecular Life and Sciences Center room-236. He felt the need to contact University Police because the room "contained dangerous chemicals," Solorzano said. The suspect was unable to enter and no property was stolen.
Light from yonder window breaks
A community service officer found a 4-inch, baseball-sized hole in a dormitory second-story window at the Los Alamitos Residence Hall, according to Solorzano. Facilities Management immediately replaced the $200 window in order to prepare for the incoming dorm students.
