LA Live lights up the sky

Los Angeles’ newest entertainment complex debuted its newest attraction — LA Live’s “Light of the Angles,” a state of the art light show. A Christmas tree lighting ceremony also took place at the debut.
Crowds already gathered at the Nokia Plaza, a $2.5 billion entertainment, dining, sports and residential venue, as early as 5 p.m. even though the first show did not start until 7 p.m.
When the clock hit 7 p.m., music started when a LA-based production company, Playing for Change, sang the song “One Love.” Local men of all ethnic backgrounds performed the song while an MTV-style show played on the 11 giant video screens in the plaza. More than one million lights adorned the 150 trees surrounding the to-be-lit 54-foot Christmas tree. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa narrated throughout the event.
Grammy winner Natalie Cole then took the stage and shared a message with the crowd.
“It’s going to be a great holiday,” she said. “We’re just going to hang in there and keep the faith and know that good things are to come.”
Pop singer Britney Spears did the honor of flipping the switch to light the giant tree.
The tree changes colors every minute, from the traditional green and red, to many other colors, and is accompanied by piano music in the background.
Christmas scenes appeared on all of the 11 video screens, like as kids sledding, wreaths and families posing for Christmas pictures. The show ended with an explosion of snow that fell on everyone.
LA Live takes up six city blocks and four million square feet, and it plays more music per square foot than elsewhere in the world. Nokia Plaza LA Live is located next to the Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles.
The most prominent building is the Nokia Theater which will hold many concerts performed by famous singers like Stevie Wonder and B.B. King starting this month.
Popular restaurants such as the Yard House, The Farm of Beverly Hills, ESPN Zone, Flemings Prime Steakhouse and Wine Bar and Lawry’s Carvery are now open for business. In the future more restaurants such as Wolfgang Puck will open in the spring.
LA Live offers a variety of entertainment choices, like Club Nokia — a concert venue and club, Lucky Strike Lanes and Lounge a — bowling and bar lounge, The Conga Room —a nightclub, The Grammy Museum and Regal Cinemas. These venues are now open to the public. ESPN will open in spring 2009 and broadcast live sports shows.
CSULB students can easily take the Metrorail Blue line from Long Beach to the Pico stop, which is just a few blocks away from Nokia LA Live.
“Light of the Angels” will continue with free hourly shows until Dec. 31. The first show starts at 7 p.m. and the last ends at 9 p.m. For more information on the venue, schedule of events and “Light of the Angels” visit www.lalive.com.
