Nobody should miss a party because of class

Once again a semester begins and, once again, students are reminded of why we’re here: to have fun, party and somehow learn something before graduation.

If you’re like me, you love a good party and hate to fail a class. In my six years of college I have found it can be hard to maintain good grades and a decent party reputation.
A serious student/party go-er can’t afford to waste time at a party that will not satisfy. I have compiled a list of some tips and advice on what to look for when attending a festive college gathering.

B.Y.O.B.

We’re all broke. Many hosts include the acronym “B.Y.O.B.” in their text invitations when throwing a house party. Bringing your own beer can either make or break a party. Parties of this sort run the obvious risk of nobody bringing any beer or, even worse, just half the guests show up with a six-pack, while the other half snake a few and tensions rise.
On the other hand, everyone could bring more than enough for themselves and everyone shares — everyone is happy.

Drinking Games

Don’t be afraid of them but also be aware of the obnoxious jerk who likes to play his own private game of annoying everyone else by shouting “BOO-YA, I’m the best at this game,” or something similar.

However, drinking games can be hilarious and are a good way to make a fool out of yourself, while meeting people at the same time.

Safety Tips

Drinking will almost always be a factor at a college party and sometimes things can get out of hand. Make sure you always have friends with you. It is a great idea if at least one of your friends remains sober. This way if someone drinks too much, or is endangering themselves or others, the sober friend can take control of the situation.

Never leave your drink unattended because there are still folks out there who like to “roofie” drinks. So watch out. If you forget your drink somewhere, just get a new one.
Last but not least, it is never a good idea to become so drunk you lose control, blackout and/or hurt yourself and others. If you are going to drink, drink responsibly.

Have fun

I have always found if you roll with a big, cheerful crew you will always have fun. If the party is kinda lame it can be easy to liven it up when you have a bunch of people to back you up. The moment you and yours start to dance, the rest of the party will join in, or start talking about you. Either way something will happen.

If it sucks leave

Don’t waste your time. If it is not your scene and your large group of friends can’t save the party then leave. Find another place to go. I hate to think of all the wasted time college folks spend at “lame-o” parties because they feel they need to stick it out.

“It’s still early; the party will start soon,” excuse is not a good one. Be bold and leave. Who cares if there are only five other people there? Embrace the awkward goodbye and get out. Your time would be better spent studying than sitting on a couch with a couple of strangers pretending it’s not awkward and creepy.

Like life, a party is what you make of it. Go with a good attitude and a fun time is almost always guaranteed.
