Four gold medals highlight former 49ers’ performances

Ex-Long Beach State standout Misty May-Treanor won her second consecutive gold medal with teammate Kerri Walsh, winning 21-18, 21-18 over China in women’s beach volleyball Aug. 21. The U.S. men’s indoor volleyball team — featuring ex-49ers Tom Hoff, David Lee and Scott Touzinsky — rode an emotional wave to the gold medal, defeating world No. 1-ranked Brazil 20-25, 25-22, 25-21, 25-23 Aug. 24.

The U.S. women’s volleyball and softball teams won silver medals, as former volleyball players Danielle Scott-Arruda, Tayyiba Haneef-Park and current 49er assistant softball coach Tairia Flowers competed. Flowers never played for LBSU.

Head coach Guy Baker and assistant Kyle Kopp also guided the U.S. women’s water polo team to the silver medal.

Cross Country

49er women place take first in season-opener

The Long Beach State women’s cross country team won the Fullerton Season Opener at Carbon Canyon Park. The 49ers finished with 82 points to finish four points ahead of Cal Coast and 42 points ahead of host Cal State Fullerton. LBSU senior Sarah Apgar finished third overall with a time of 18:14. For the men, freshman Matt Maldonado finished sixth with a time of 26:37. The 49er men finished second with 62 points, five points behind CS Fullerton.

Women’s basketball

New director of operations named

Michelle Erickson will join head coach Mary Hegarty’s staff as the team’s director of operations. Erickson spent the last two years at Mater Dei High School as the junior varsity head coach. She becomes the second new addition to the staff, along with assistant coach Jackie Zink.
