LBSU picks up split after Day 1 in San Diego

No. 15 Long Beach State picked up a split on the opening day at the Triton Invitational hosted by UC San Diego on Saturday.

The 49ers (1-2) upset No. 14 Hartwick, 11-7, before losing to No. 11 Loyola Marymount, 9-8, in double overtime.

Senior Keala O’Sullivan led LBSU to victory with three goals against Hartwick. The ‘Niners extended a 6-3 halftime lead to 11-4 in the third quarter, and then held on to take the win.

In the second match of the day, the 49ers were led by Lauren Sieprath, who had three goals, including two in the first quarter to help spark LBSU.

The Lions would finish the first half ahead 6-3, but The Beach would respond in the second half.

Kristin Stragier totaled 16 saves in the match, holding the Lions scoreless in the third while the ‘Niners scored three goals to tie the match at 6.

Both teams picked up two goals in the fourth, as Kelsie Emerick tied the match with 1:22 remaining to send the game into overtime. However, after a scoreless first overtime, LMU put the match away with a Nicole Hughes goal.

The 49ers will continue play all day Sunday at the Triton Invitational.
