Defending Big West champs improve to 2-0 in conference

The No. 42 Long Beach State women’s tennis team picked up a second Big West Conference win in Fullerton on Saturday.

After taking care of Cal State Northride on Friday, the 49ers swept Cal State Fullerton, 7-0, and won all nine matches on the day.

The 49ers (4-3, 2-0 Big West) started the day with a three-match sweep of doubles, which accounts for one point in a best-of-three format.

The closest match was in No. 1 doubles where seniors Hannah Grady and Jessica Weeks defeated Shelley Injejikian and Cheyenne Inglis, 8-4. The 49ers domination of the match continued in singles, where the only close match was in No. 2 singles as Deborah Armstrong took a 6-1 first set win and rebounded from a 5-7 loss to win the decider, 10-6.

Rachel Manassse and Julie Luzar both only gave up one game in their matches at No. 3 and No. 5 singles respectively, while Grady, Lisa Sutton and Anais Dallara also posted singles wins.

Long Beach State returns home for two matches next weekend at the Rhodes Tennis Center. On Friday, February 27 the 49ers will host UC Riverside in another Big West matchup at 2 p.m., before playing Saint Mary’s at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 28.
