Baseball, softball pitchers earn weekly honors

The Big West Conference honored Long Beach State’s Adam Wilk and Brooke Turner as the Pitcher of the Week in their respective sports Monday.

Wilk, a junior left-hander for the Dirtbags, tossed eight scoreless innings in a 1-0 win over Cal State Northridge last Friday. He struck out six batters, allowed just four hits and retired the last 12 batters he faced.

The award was Wilk’s first of his career and first for a Dirtbag this season.

Turner, however, is no stranger to the award.

The sophomore picked up two wins over the weekend against Santa Barbara to earn her second honor this season and 10th of her career.

Turner hurled a two-hit shutout — the 23rd of her career — en route to a 4-0 win in the first game of a doubleheader last Saturday.

She helped complete the three-game series sweep the following day in a 6-1 victory for the 49ers. The Buena Park-native fanned six batters and allowed an unearned run on six hits to a hot-hitting Gauchos squad that leads the conference with 318 hits.
