‘Niner Notes: Dec. 2

Softball: The Beach adds two for 2010-2011

The Long Beach State softball team announced that high school prospects Karli Sandoval and Erin Wesley have signed National Letters of Intent to play for the 49ers next season.

Sandoval, a senior at Riverside Poly High School, is a catcher who was a second-team All-Big VIII selection.

“Karli is a consistent hitter that will bring power to our line-up as she continues to develop,” head coach Kim Sowder said in a release. “I like the fact that she is also capable of playing the corners, which gives us more depth and options.”

Wesley, a senior at Los Osos High School, is a right-handed pitcher who earned all-state, all-area and All-Inland Valley honors after posting a 13-5 record with a 0.75 earned runs average.

“Erin is a hard-throwing pitcher with a great work ethic and a passion for what she does,” Sowder said.

The 49ers open the 2010 season at the Sportco Kick-Off Classic in Las Vegas, Nev. on Feb. 13 with a doubleheader against Loyola Marymount and Illinois.

Men’s Volleyball: Setter signs with LBSU

Setter Connor Olbright signed a National Letter of Intent during the November signing period, giving interim head coach Andy Read his first commitment as head of the program.

Olbright has been a member of the USA Youth National Team the last two years and was a first-team All-Century League selection at El Modena High School in 2008 and 2009.

“We are very excited to have Connor join the family here at The Beach,” Read said in a release. “We love that Connor is a winner and he will provide our team with a nice block and point scoring serve from the setter position.”

Men’s Water Polo: Two ‘Niners receive honorable mentions

Senior Jeff Greenwood and sophomore Alexsandr Petrovic were named All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation team honorable mentions, as announced by the conference on Wednesday.

Greenwood was second on the team in scoring, netting 32 goals this season. He finished his career at No. 4 on the 49er all-time goals scored list with 177 and recorded four hat tricks for the season.

Petrovic finished the season as the 49ers’ leading scorer with 35 goals in 21 games. He amassed four hat-tricks and led the team in scoring in 13 of LBSU’s 21 games.

The 49ers (9-12, 1-7 MPSF) finished their season eighth in the conference standings and national ranking.
