Men’s Basketball: Beach men fail to complete Central Coast sweep

Stephan Gilling led three 49er players in double figures with 17 points in a 64-62 loss to UC Santa Barbara on Saturday.

The Beach (12-13, 6-6 Big West) out-rebounded the Gauchos (14-8, 9-3 Big West) 40-28, including 20-8 on the offensive boards, but was outgunned from the free throw line. The 49ers went 4-for-10 from the charity stripe to the Gauchos’ 17-for-24 mark.

LBSU finished 25-of-62 from the floor and 8-of-21 on 3-pointers.

Gilling got the 49ers going early scoring 11 of his 17 points in the first half, while finishing the game making 5-of-11 3s.

Casper Ware kept the 49ers in the game in the second half scoring 10 of his 12 points after the break. T.J. Robinson added 12 points and 15 rebounds, his 15th double-double of the season and 20th of his career.

Jamie Serna made 8-of-9 shots for UCSB and led the Gauchos with 17 points. Will Brew added 12 points, while Orlando Johnson had 11 points and eight assists.

Women’s Golf: Zavaleta tied for 15th heading into final round in Stanford

The 49er women’s golf team made its spring season debut at the Peg Barnard Invitational with a 34-over par 318, finishing in ninth place in Saturday’s opening round at the Stanford Golf Course.

California leads the 11-team tournament as the Golden Bears recorded a 12-over 296 to hold a eight stroke lead over second place Stanford and Washington.

Sophomore Noelle Zavaleta led the 49ers with a six-over 77 to finish tied for 15th, while junior Lindsey McAtee finished one shot back with a 78 to tie for 21st.

Senior Brenda Chhuor tied for 29th with a 79 and freshman Simone Hoey tied for 52nd with an 84.

Playing in her first tournament for LBSU, sophomore Monica Villareal finished tied for 54th with a 14-over 85.

Pia Halbig of California sits on top of the leader board with an even-71 and holds a one-stroke lead over second place Anya Alvarez of Washington.

Final round play concludes on Sunday at 8 a.m.

Softball: 49ers start season with losses to Illinois, LMU

The Beach softball team (0-2) fell to Illinois and Loyola Marymount at the Sportco Kick-Off Classic in Las Vegas to open its 2010 campaign.

The 49ers dropped a 4-3 decision to LMU in an eight-inning affair, before suffering a 14-4 defeat at the hands of the Fighting Illini.

Illinois 14, Long Beach State 4 (5 innings)

Illinois used a pair of big innings to run away with a 14-4 victory in the 49ers’ second game of the Sportco Kick-Off Classic Saturday afternoon.

The Illini plated six runs in the bottom half of the third inning to go up 7-3. Both Meredith Hackett and Conrad connected for two-run home runs to highlight the rally.

Illinois then broke the game open in the bottom of the fourth, scoring seven runs on six hits.

The 49ers were able to push one more run across in the fifth inning, but it wasn’t enough with the eight-run rule in effect. Freshman Nalani St. Germain led off with a single and eventually crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by senior Kristen Pocock.

St. Germain went 2-for-3 to finish the day with five hits in Saturday’s two games and scored twice, while senior Ashley Levine homered. Junior Christina Schallig added an RBI single and freshman Bree Stephan went 1-for-2 with a run scored.

Senior Bridgette Pagano (0-1) suffered the loss in the circle, giving up 13 hits and six walks.

Loyola Marymount 4, Long Beach State 3 (8 innngs)

St. Germain led The Beach in the opener against LMU, going 3-for-4, with a homerun, double and two RBI. Levine also had an RBI double.

Sophomore Taylor Petty (0-1) went the distance in the circle, allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits, while striking out five.

Down 3-2, the Lions quickly tied it up in the top of the sixth when Kelly Sarginson doubled home Sam Fischer.

With the international tiebreaker rule in effect, J.J. Hartung was placed on second to start the eighth inning for LMU. After advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt, she came around to score what proved to be the game-winner on a 49er error.

LBSU continues action at the Sportco Kick-Off Classic tomorrow when it takes on Kent State (10 a.m.) and Cal State Bakersfield (2 p.m.) at Eller Media Stadium. 

Track and Field: 49ers complete action at Washington, Northern Arizona

The Long Beach State track and field team had nine athletes compete at the Husky Classic in Seattle, Wash., on Saturday.

Matt Maldonado led the 49ers, shattering the school record in the mile with a time of 4:03.94 to finish fifth in his heat. LBSU’s previous best in the mile was held by Mario Cobian at 4:11.85.

Travis Kuhlman posted the second-best mark in 49er history in the 3000-meter run at 8:25.45, while Steven DeCastro clocked in at 8:29.60 to rank fourth on the all-time charts.

Alex Freitas finished eighth overall in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:51.84, while Mario Granville added a season-low 1:55.75 in the same event.

Alex Black cleared 6-08.75 in the high jump.

Annie Randall finished fifth in her heat in the mile run, clocking in with the sixth-best time in school history (4:59.85). Jessica Barnard also competed in the event, finishing seventh in her section at 5:13.29.

Northern Arizona University Invitational

LBSU wrapped up action at the NAU Invitational Saturday afternoon at J.L. Walkup Skydome.
Colin Dunbar led the men with a pair of third-place finishes in the weight throw (61-07) and shot put (53-10.25). His mark in the shot put ranks him sixth all-time at LBSU. Rajan Bains also took fourth in the shot with a distance of 51-07.

In the 60m hurdle preliminaries, Nimrod Piggee ran a lifetime-best 8.27 to move up to third among the 49er all-time top 10. Piggee finished third overall in the finals.

Nicholas Armstrong also posted the ninth-fastest time in school history as he crossed the finish line in 8.52 seconds to take sixth.

Nathan Alade added a top 10 finish in the 60-meter dash. He clocked in at 7.01 seconds in the preliminaries, which ranks him sixth all-time at LBSU.

Chris Sweeney posted a second-place performance in the 400m with a season-low 49.38. Alex Goldberg wasn’t far behind in fourth at 50.34.

LBSU took second and third in the triple jump as Manny Nezier led the way with the sixth-longest leap in school history (47-04.25). Kevin Jenkins also had a solid jump with a mark of 46-04.25.

On the women’s side, Kayla Kamaka posted a fifth-place finish in the pole vault, clearing a season-high 12-01.50. Amanda Klinchuch also had a top 10 performance with a season-best 10-08.

Katrina Graves-Johnson took sixth in the high jump (5-05), while Stephanie Glick notched a personal-record 35-11.25 in the triple jump.

Kristen Kiefer placed sixth overall in the 60-meter hurdles with a lifetime-best 9.15. That mark ties her for ninth all-time in school history.

Brenda Finney was LBSU’s top peformer in the 400m, clocking in with a personal-record 1:00.91.

In the 800m run, sophomore Denise Nunez ran the ninth-f
astest time in 49er history, crossing the finish line in 2 minutes, 24.26 seconds to take seventh overall.

Rachel Hammar was the 49ers’ top finisher in the shot put, taking ninth with a season-best 40-05.50. Alexandra Cervantes also tossed a season-long 46-06.75 in the weight throw to place 12th overall.

The 49ers take a week off from competition before heading to Seattle, Wash., for the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Indoor Championships, Feb. 26-27.
