Tigers put a damper on LBSU senior night

Box score

After overcoming a 19-point deficit, the Long Beach State women’s basketball team came up short and lost to the Pacific Tigers, 77-67, on senior night at the Walter Pyramid.

With the loss, the 49ers (12-16, 8-7 Big West Conference) dropped into a tie for fourth in the Big West with UC Santa Barbara, who defeated Cal Poly, 85-70. Pacific (5-21, 3-11 Big West) earned just its second win in the last 15 games.

LBSU was led by senior Karina Figueroa’s 18 points and five assists. Senior Lauren Sims and junior Melanie Lisnock chipped in 17 points and 12 points respectively. Senior Ally Wade added a team-high eight rebounds.

LBSU shot just 26 percent from 3-point land compared to the Tigers’ 45 percent and the 49ers were outrebounded, 35-28.

LBSU head coach Jody Wynn said, “Our shots just were not falling and we were not crashing the offensive boards like we planned to.”

The Tigers’ offensive attack was led by freshman Jordan Rogers who contributed a career-high 19 points as Pacific shot 56 percent from the field collectively.

“Our lack of defensive containment was our biggest fault,” Wynn said. “They beat us off the bounce nearly every possession and created shots for their teammates.”

After falling behind by 19 with 6:59 to go in the first half, LBSU stepped up its defensive intensity using a full court press that produced 27 turnovers and resulted in a tie score of 56-56 with 6:40 to play.

“Our press generated points for our offense,” Wynn said. “We got extra possessions out of it. We just could not knock down some big shots and they did.”

The score remained tight down the stretch until the Tigers went on a late 12-4 run that led them to victory.

“We got tired,” Wynn said. “We do not have a lot of depth and we got tired.”

The 49ers wrap up the regular season on Saturday, March 6 at UC Riverside in a showdown that starts at 5 p.m.
