Baseball: Dirtbags drop series opener to Beavers

Box score

Long Beach State fell, 16-4, in its series opener at Oregon State on a rainy Friday night at Goss Stadium.

Beach starter Drew Gagnon (3-3) was charged with the loss after lasting 4.0 innings and allowing three runs — two earned — on seven hits, while striking out two batters. LBSU (9-11) committed five errors in the defeat.

Brennan Metzger, Jordan Casas, Steve Tinoco and Tre Dennis made up a quarter of Dirtbags to collect two hits for the evening. Dennis also hammered a solo home run for his first homer of the season and scored twice to pace the LBSU offense.

The Beavers were led by Steve Romero’s 4-for-4 outing at the plate with a home run and three RBIs. Matt Boyd (4-0) picked up the win after coming in for relief.

Due to continuing rains in the Corvallis area, the two teams will play a double-header beginning at 1 p.m. tomorrow in an effort to complete the series.

Track and Field: ‘Niners add 4 Big West qualifiers

With five distance runners competing on the first afternoon of the Stanford Invitational, the Long Beach State track and field team added four Big West qualifiers.

Steven DeCastro bettered his 5,000-meter lifetime best by nearly 10 seconds as he clocked in at 14 minutes, 14.96 seconds. Travis Kuhlman also finished with a season-low and conference-qualifying mark of 14:45.37.

Alex Freitas and Raul Arcos also posted Big West qualifying times in the 1,500 meters, as they each took ninth in their respective sections. Freitas clocked in at 3:55.66, while Arcos crossed the finish line in 3:56.86.

In her first 1500-meter race of the outdoor season, Missy Barclay was a conference qualifier with a time of 4:32.49, which put her seventh in her heat.

LBSU returns to action at the Stanford Invite and the Cal-Nevada Championships tomorrow.
