Track and Field: Medwood wins hurdles crown, 49er men finish 2nd

Senior Kenneth Medwood led the Long Beach State men to second place behind host Cal State Northridge at the Big West Championships Saturday afternoon at Matador Track.

The 49er men compiled 145 points, while the women finished seventh with 53 points.

Medwood captured the 400-meter hurdle championship as he crossed the finish line in a school-record 49.66 seconds. He improved on his previous school record of 50.37, which he set at the Beach Invitational in April.

Junior Sam Jeter made it a one-two finish for LBSU, taking runner-up honors with a lifetime-best 50.24.That mark ranks him second in 49er history.

Nimrod Piggee took third in the 110-meter hurdles, clocking in at 14.65 seconds. Matt Maldonado chipped in a runner-up performance in the 1500-meter run (3:50.55), while Alex Freitas took third in the 800 meters (1:50.23).

Both Chris Sweeney (48.68) and Alex Goldberg (48.79) put points on the board in the 400-meter dash as they finished fifth and sixth, respectively.

LBSU had three scorers in the 200 meters, led by Richard Crawford, who placed fourth overall in 21.90 seconds. Louis Ward (22.01) and Medwood (23.37) also finished fifth and seventh.

Both men’s relay squads had top-three finishes. The quartet of Nathan Alade, Crawford, Piggee and Jeter finished second in the 4×100 with a time of 41.04 seconds. The 4×400 team of Medwood, Goldberg, Freitas and Jeter finished third overall (3:13.50).

In the field events, Cesar Puga had a runner-up showing in the men’s discus with a toss of 172 feet, 4 inches. He was also the 49ers’ top finisher in the shot put with a season-long 53-8 1/4, which was good enough for fifth place.

Peter Fourtounis added a fourth-place performance in the discus (162-00), while Rajan Bains finished sixth in the discus and eighth in the shot put.

Kevin Jenkins also took second in the triple jump with a lifetime-best 49-6 1/4, while Eric Nowell placed sixth overall (47-11 1/4).

On the women’s side, Kristen Kiefer finished fourth in the 400 hurdles with a season-low 62.12. Anastasiya Kholev also scored after claiming eighth place (63.95).

Jennifer Rodriguez bettered her lifetime best in the 1500 meters, clocking in at 4:33.68, which ranks ninth in school history.

Katrina Graves-Johnson led The Beach in the high jump, placing fifth (5-6 1/2), while Sara Macey took seventh (5-6 1/2).

Rachel Hammar and Alexandra Cervantes also scored in the shot put. Hammar finished fifth overall with a distance of 43-5 3/4, while Cervantes took eighth (40 7 3/4).

The 49ers next head to Austin, Texas, for the NCAA West Regional Championships, May 27-29.

Day 1: Hicks captures javelin crown

Junior Randi Hicks claimed the women’s javelin title on the first day of the Big West Conference Championships, Friday afternoon at Matador Track in Northridge.

Hicks won the event with a toss of 162 feet, 4 inches to tie the conference meet record. Senior Alex Shaw made it a one-two finish for The Beach as she earned runner-up honors (159-06). Sophomore Rebecca Hamilton also scored for the 49ers, finishing eighth with a lifetime-best 120-10.

Cervantes (hammer) and junior Kate Beighton (pole vault) each picked up a point for Long Beach State with eighth-place performances in their respective events. Cervantes had a lifetime-best 157-07 in the hammer, while Beighton registered a season-high 11-05 in the pole vault.

Medwood led the 49er men on the first day as he notched a runner-up finish in the long jump with a lifetime-best 24-07. He also advanced to the 400-meter hurdle (52.05) and 200-meter (21.49) finals.

Jeter had the top 400-meter hurdles qualifying time, clocking in at 51.30.

Also scoring in the long jump were Nowell (4th, 24-2 1/4) and sophomore Cameron Gillett (6th, 23-5 1/2).

In the distance events, junior Steven DeCastro put two points on the board for LBSU, finishing seventh in the 3000-meter steeplechase (9:21.69). Sophomore Brett Hasvold also scored in the 10,000 meters as he took sixth (31:50.07).

In the field events, junior Nicholas Armstrong led a quartet of 49ers in the high jump, tying for fifth with a height of 6-08.25. Senior Alex Black also scored for The Beach, clearing 6-06.25 for seventh place.

Fourtounis took fifth in the hammer (170-05), while freshman Ryan Rosales placed sixth overall with a personal-record 173-09 in the javelin.

Men’s Golf: Lein named conference honorable mention

Benjamin Lein was selected to the Honorable Mention All-Big West Conference team on Tuesday.

The freshman finished in 25th place at the Big West Championships, recording a 12-over 228 at the two-day 54-hole tournament in San Luis Obispo. Lein helped the 49ers place third with an 895, finishing just five strokes behind second-place Pacific (890).

Lein recorded two top-10 finishes during the 2009-2010 season, placing his highest finish at the 14th Annual Del Walker Intercollegiate in Long Beach as he tied for eighth, while also recording a career-best low round of 67 at the Virginia Country Club. Lein finishes the season with a scoring average of 74.1.
