Track and field: Three 49ers advance to NCAA Championships

Kenneth Medwood is the latest Long Beach State track and field athlete to advance to the NCAA Championships after placing eighth in the West Preliminary on Friday in Austin, Texas.

The senior joins Alex Shaw and Randi Hicks, who both qualified for the championships after finishing ninth and 10th, receptively, in the women’s javelin on Thursday.

Medwood finished with a time of 50.30 seconds — his second fastest time this season — in the 400-meter hurdles. Shaw, a senior, finished with distance of 162 feet, 6 inches, while Hicks advanced to the championships with a distance of 161-11.

Athletes competing in individual events must finish in the top 12 during the preliminary round to advance to the NCAA Championships on June 9.

The NCAA Championships are set to take place from June 9-12 in Eugene, Ore. at the University of Oregon’s Hayward Field.

Cesar Puga (men’s discus) and Kevin Jenkins (men’s triple jump) are expected to compete on Saturday. Meanwhile, Tayler O’Connor, Katrina Graves-Johnson and Sara Macey are all slated to take part in the women’s high jump.

Baseball: Buckley to be introduced as seventh head coach

Long Beach State will introduce Troy Buckley as the Dirtbags’ new head coach at a press conference at 1 p.m. in the Walter Pyramid’s Ukleja Room on Tuesday.

Buckley will succeed Mike Weathers, who made the decision to retire earlier this season after nine years at the helm.

This season marked Buckley’s first back with the team after spending two years with the Pittsburgh Pirates organization.
