‘Niner Notes

‘Niners to hold first official practice Tuesday

Long Beach State women’s basketball head coach Jody Wynn will get the chance to work with her entire squad for the first time this season when the 49ers conduct their first official practice of the season Tuesday.

The 90-minute practice is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. and will take place in The Goldmine (West Gym).

The 49ers have plenty of new faces on this season’s roster, with just four returning players that contributed a significant amount of minutes last season.

Wynn will have added experience and depth with the return of Courtney Jacob, who redshirted last season after sustaining an injury.

In all, The Beach has seven freshmen who will be vying for playing time this season.

An NCAA rule change that went into effect this season permits women’s basketball teams to practice 40 days before their first game, but they will also be limited to 30 practices within that timeframe.

In the past, both men’s and women’s basketball programs had to wait until Oct. 15 to conduct official practices. The change only affects the women’s programs, however, as their male counterparts still have to wait until mid-October.

The 49ers’ first game is tentatively scheduled for Nov. 15 at Loyola Marymount.

Women’s volleyball drops out of Top 25

A pair of losses, including six consecutive sets, cost the Long Beach State women’s volleyball team its spot in the American Volleyball Coaches Association Top 25 poll released Monday.

The 49ers (11-5, 1-2 Big West Conference), who were ranked No. 21 last week, blew a 2-0 lead at UC Santa Barbara and were swept at Cal Poly. LBSU, along with Arizona, received 36 votes to lead all teams outside the poll. No. 25 Saint Mary’s received 44 votes.

Stanford (13-0) received all 60 first-place votes to retain the No. 1 spot.

The ‘Niners will return to action Friday against UC Davis. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Walter Pyramid.

It will also be Breast Cancer Awareness Night. Tickets for fans wearing pink shirts will be available for $3.
