Men’s golf in 9th after Day 1

The Long Beach State men’s golf team finished the first day at the Gifford Collegiate Championship in ninth place.

Benjamin Lein paced the 49ers to a Round 1 score of 26-over-par 381 to finish 14 strokes behind tournament leader UCLA on Monday. The sophomore led The Beach by carding a 3-over 74 to finish tied for 13th in San Martin, Calif.

Two more Pac-10 teams, Stanford and Washington, finished the first round just behind UCLA in second and third place, respectively.

The Bruins’ Patrick Cantlay shot a 4-under 67 to finish the opening round atop the individual leaderboard.

49ers junior Kevin Roy sits in a tie for 25th after recording a 4-over 75 on Monday. Teammate Austin Love finished a stroke behind to tie for 33rd. LBSU sophomore Raymond Ho carded a 6-over 77 to finish tied for 47th.

Sophomore Philip Chian recorded an 8-over 79 (T-59th), and Kevin Lim shot a 9-over 80 (69th) to round out the 49ers’ first-day scores.
