‘Niners finish 1-2 at Gold Rush

A pair of Long Beach State women’s golfers finished atop the leaderboard Tuesday in the final round of the inaugural Gold Rush tournament in Yorba Linda, Calif.

Sophomore Simone Hoey won the individual crown and finished six shots ahead of teammate Monica Villarreal at the Yorba Linda Country Club.

Hoey, who had the lead at the end of all three rounds, shot even-par 72 in the final round. She finished at 3-over 219 overall.

Villarreal, who started the day tied for third place, shot 3-over 75 and finished with a 9-over 225 total.

No. 46-ranked San Diego State claimed the team title, finishing eights shots ahead of the second-place 49ers. The Aztecs carded a 54-over 918 score compared to LBSU’s 62-over 926.

49ers senior Lindsay McAtee jumped 13 spots in the standings to finish in 26th place. McAtee fired a 6-over 78 in the final round and finished at 26-over 242.

Noelle Zavaleta (+27) and Reina Rogers (+32) rounded out the scores for The Beach.

The ‘Niners will return to the links at the three-day Bruin Wave Invitational in Santa Clarita, Calif., from Feb. 28 to March 2.

Battle at the Beach

The LBSU men’s team jumped a spot and finished 11th out of 13 teams at the second annual Battle at the Beach in Newport Coast, Calif.

The 49ers shot 59-over 1,109 over three days.

No. 2 UCLA (7-over 1,057) won the team title by three shots over No. 25 San Diego. The Toreros’ Kenneth McCready (7-under 203) won the individual competition by two shots over the Bruins’ Patrick Cantlay.

The highest finisher for The Beach was sophomore Benjamin Lein, who turned in a 10-over 220 total and tied for 43rd place. Kevin Roy (+13), Raymond Ho (+14), Kevin Lim (+16), Philip Chian (+18) and Austin Love (+21) rounded out the team’s scores.

The 49ers will return to action at the two-day Cowboy Classic in Palm Desert, Calif., on Feb. 26 and 27.
