Senior Colin Dunbar won the weight throw Friday to lead the Long Beach State track and field team in the first day of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Indoor Championships at Dempsey Indoor in Seattle, Wash.

Dunbar got the 49ers off to a strong start as he finished at the top of the standings in the first event of the day with a toss of 64-09.75. He beat out reigning MPSF champion Carter Wells (Stanford) and Alec Faldermeyer (UCLA), who was ranked first heading into the meet. LBSU senior Rajan Bains also placed eighth overall in the event with a distance of 56-11.50.

Senior Nimrod Piggee advanced in the 60-meter hurdles after tying for fourth in the prelims with a time of 8.25. He will compete in the finals tomorrow at 12:30 p.m.

The men’s quartet of Raul Arcos, Sam Jeter, Jonathan Evans and Heath Reedy also clocked in at 10:00.21 in the distance medley relay, which ranks them third in school history.

Senior Nicholas Armstrong led a pair of 49ers in the heptathlon as he is third with 3,010 points after the first four events. He won the shot put with a lifetime-best 42-11, and tied for second in the high jump (6-06). Armstrong also finished among the top 10 in the long jump (sixth) and the 60-meter dash (eighth).

Senior Jennifer Rodriguez led The Beach women, running the fifth-fastest 5,000-meter time (17 minutes, 26.38 seconds) in school history.

The women’s distance medley relay squad, which was comprised of Rosa Del Toro, Shakina Phillips, Jessica Barnard and Nina Moore, scored for the 49ers, clocking in at 12:03.73 to rank third on the LBSU all-time charts.

Coming off of an injury, Alexandra Kruthers also ran a solid 26.16 in the 200m.

“I think the competition is a lot to take in for a number of our kids,” 49ers head coach Andy Sythe said in a statement. “I think the nerves got the better of us today and we just need to get better and stay focused for tomorrow.”

Long Beach State returns to Dempsey Indoor for the final day of the MPSF Indoor Championships tomorrow. Saturday’s action gets underway at 11 a.m. and is slated to conclude with the women’s 4×400 relay at 3 p.m.
