‘Niner Notes: Feb. 26

Women’s water polo

Krizia Cerda’s four goals helped No. 12-ranked Long Beach State defeat No. 17 UC Davis, 12-10, in its second game at the UC Irvine Invitational on Saturday.

The 49ers had five players score multiple goals as the 49ers set a season high in goals scored on the day. LBSU stormed out to a 5-3 first-period lead, then added three more goals in the second quarter to grab an 8-4 lead at halftime.

The Beach held off a late Aggies rally for the victory.

Senior goalkeeper Kristen Stragier made eight saves for Long Beach State, which lost 9-5 to No. 6 Loyola Marymount earlier in the day.

The 49ers return to action Sunday at the UC Irvine Invitational, playing the host Anteaters at 9:15 a.m. in a rematch of the fifth-place match at the Triton Invitational.

Track and field

Senior Nicholas Armstrong set a school record in the heptathlon Saturday as the Long Beach State track and field team closed out the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Indoor Championships at Dempsey Indoor in Seattle, Wash.

Armstrong established the mark with 5,399 points to finish third overall in the competition. He topped two-time outdoor All-American and fellow Cerritos College transfer Chris Richardson on LBSU’s all-time list.

On the women’s side, junior Katrina Graves-Johnson cleared 5-06.50 in the high jump to tie for sixth overall. Meanwhile, junior Rosa Del Toro notched a personal best and second-fastest time in school history in the 3,000-meter run (9:42.46).

Long Beach State officially opens the outdoor season on Saturday, March 5, when it heads to Fullerton for the Ben Brown Invitational.

Men’s golf

After one round of play at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate, the Long Beach State men’s golf team sits in ninth-place after shooting 16-over-par 304 on Saturday. Second round action was postponed due to darkness and will be completed on Sunday morning.

Texas A&M led the field of 20 teams at 6-over and has a three-stroke lead over second-place UNLV (+9) at the Classic Club in Palm Desert.

Sophomore Raymond Ho was the top individual for LBSU, carding an even-72 to tie for fourth-place overall on the leaderboard. Tom Carlson of New Mexico paced the field at 3-under and has a one-shot lead over Kevin Penner of UNLV.

Junior Kevin Roy tied for 19th after shooting a 74 to finish at 2-over, followed by sophomore Kevin Lim in 43rd with a 77 (+5). Fellow classmate Philip Chian recorded an 81 to tie for 85th, and Benjamin Lein finished with an 87 (100th).

Final round play is scheduled to conclude on Sunday immediately following the second round.
