Victory gives 49ers fourth consecutive Big West regular-season title

The Long Beach State women’s tennis team captured its fourth consecutive regular-season Big West Conference title Saturday with a 5-2 win on the road at the University of Pacific.

With the win, the 49ers (17-5, 7-1 Big West) also clinched a No. 1 seed in the upcoming conference tournament.

In doubles action, the 49ers won the first match of the day at No. 3 as Sarah Cantlay and Julie Luzar defeated Olga Gumenyuk and Susan Te, 8-2.

Pacific (8-9, 4-3 Big West), however, even up doubles play as Jennifer Widjaja and Julia Hansen with an 8-4 win at the No. 1 spot over LBSU’s Anais Dallara and Klaudia Malenovska.

Jaklin Alawi and Rachel Manasse then responded with a 9-7 victory over Eslami and Irvin in No. 2 action to seal the doubles point for the ‘Niners.

In her first match since being reinserted into the lineup, Alawi posted a 6-1, 6-3 win over Kateryna Nezhura, before Malenovska defeated Hansen, 6-2, 6-4.

The Tigers earned two points with wins at No. 6 and No. 1 singles to extend the match, but Armstrong outlasted Gumenyuk in a first-set tiebreaker en route to a 7-6 (3), 6-4 victory that sealed the match.

Rachel Manasse rounded out the day with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 comeback victory over Shabby Eslami at No. 4 singles for LBSU’s final point.

The 49ers will face the winner of the 8/9 match on April 29 in the opening round of the Big West tournament at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.
