49ers make easy work of Titans in first round

The No. 1-seeded Long Beach State women’s tennis team finished the season with a five-match winning streak, and sure enough, the 49ers carried that momentum over into a decisive 4-0 victory over No. 8 Cal State Fullerton on Friday in the first round of the Big West Conference Championships.

Sophomore Sarah Cantlay played a crucial role in the victory, picking up two wins for the Beach en route to its shutout at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.

Cantlay’s first victory came at doubles play alongside junior Julie Luzar as the No. 3 duo swept Karina Akhmedova and Malorie De La Cruz, 8-0.

The No. 1 tandem of Anais Dallara and Klaudia Malenovska quickly followed with an 8-1 win over Tiffany Mai and Monica Rodriguez.

At singles play, Cantlay once again was first to finish. She made quick work of her No. 6 counterpart, De La Cruz, 6-1, 6-0.

No. 5 singles player Jakin Alawi, in her second match since being reinserted to the lineup, defeated Megan Sandford, 6-2, 6-4.

Malenovska came away with the clinching victory at the No. 2 spot over Morgan McIntosh, 6-2, 6-2.

LBSU will continue its road to a Big West title against the winner of UC Santa Barbara and Pacific’s match at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
