Pair of LBSU field athletes collect weekly honors

Senior Randi Hicks of the Long Beach State track and field team was named the Big West Conference Women’s Field Athlete of the Week, while junior Ben Woodruff was selected as the Men’s Field Athlete of the Week, the conference office announced Wednesday.

Hicks won the javelin at the Drake Relays with a season-best 165-11. Her mark is tops in the Big West and also moves her up the national rankings to No. 14. With the victory, the Ventura, Calif., native became the third overall and first women’s Drake Relays champion for LBSU.

Meanwhile, Woodruff registered a lifetime-best 221-01 to finish ahead of the pack in the men’s javelin at the Steve Scott Invitational. His effort was the best in the Big West this season and ranks him among the top 50 in the nation. Woodruff also etched his name in the 49er record books. He ranks third behind All-Americans Doug Lefler and Chris Richardson.

LBSU has racked up 12 weekly awards in 2011 with at least one athlete being honored following each of its seven weekends of competition. This is the first award of the season for both Hicks and Woodruff.

The 49ers will kick off the Big West Championships with the decathlon and heptathlon events on Friday and Saturday at UC Irvine’s Anteater Stadium. The main events of the conference meet will also take place at Anteater Stadium from May 13-14.
