Shane Peterson makes MLB debut
Former Dirtbag Shane Peterson, who played first base, outfield and pitched for Long Beach State from 2006 to 2008, made his major league debut with the Oakland Athletics yesterday.
Peterson played first base and struck out in his first at-bat. With the start, Peterson became the 43rd former Dirtbag to reach the majors and the 12th former Dirtbag on an active roster.
LBSU currently leads all schools with 12 former players on active rosters. Arizona State is second with nine.
Peterson was named a third-team All-American by Collegiate Baseball and is the last Dirtbag to become an All-American.

Women’s golf wins Fresno State Lexus Classic
The LBSU women’s golf team won its second consecutive tournament Wednesday with a first-place finish at the Fresno State Lexus Classic. The 49ers’ Simone Hoey won a second straight individual title as well.
The ‘Niners trailed Tulsa by three strokes going into the final round, where they put together the best round of the tournament to win by one with a score of +28. Rounding out the top five was Tulsa (+29), San Jose State (+32), UC Irvine (+39) and Idaho (+43).
Hoey was one of only two players to finish under par at the tournament, which was played at Copper River Country Club in Fresno. Her final score of five strokes under par led her to a four-stroke victory over UCI’s Luciane Lee.

Women’s water polo to conclude regular season
The ninth-ranked LBSU women’s water polo team will conclude its season with a match against UC Irvine on Thursday. The 49ers (23-5) will try to set a school record for wins in the match, which will be played at the Campus Pool at 7 p.m.
