James Ennis signs with Australia’s Perth Wildcats

Former Long Beach State standout James Ennis has signed with the Perth Wildcats of Australia’s National Basketball League, the team announced Saturday.

Ennis’ rights still belong to the Miami Heat, however, and his contract includes an option to return to Miami at any time should the Heat decide to add him to the team this season.

All indications are that Ennis will spend the 2013-14 season in Australia, though, and debut with the Heat in 2014-15 after a couple of the Heat’s veteran contracts expire.

“I can’t wait to get over to Australia and join my new teammates,” Ennis told the Perth team website. “Obviously, I would have liked to be playing in the NBA this season, but it’s a huge opportunity to develop my skills in a good competition and put on a show for the fans in Perth.”

Ennis’ agent, Scott Nichols, told Fox Sports Florida that the opt-out clause was the reason Ennis chose Perth. He was also considering playing in Russia, France, Italy and Germany.
