Misty May-Treaner to leave Long Beach State for USC

Misty May-Treanor announced her departure from the Long Beach State sand volleyball program Tuesday to go to Southern California.

The three-time Olympic gold medalist was a volunteer assistant coach for the team, and she will assume the same position at USC.

May-Treanor told LBSU that she was leaving the team to focus on a USC program that operates both its sand and indoor teams separately. LBSU’s teams share players and coaches.

As a student-athlete at LBSU and captain of the women’s indoor volleyball team, May-Treanor led the ‘Niners to record the NCAA’s first ever undefeated season for Division I volleyball in 1998.

After winning her third beach volleyball Olympic gold medal at the 2012 London games alongside teammate Kerri Walsh Jennings, May-Treanor retired as a professional player. She reunited with her alma mater this past spring to volunteer as assistant coach and help guide the team in winning its first national championship.

May-Treanor’s resignation adds to The Beach’s already hindered chances of a second consecutive NCAA championship, as the team lost five of its ten starters last year to graduation.
