49ers can’t convert opportunities in 1-0 loss

The Long Beach State women’s soccer team saw its three-game winning streak come to an end Monday night with a 1-0 loss at San Diego.

The 49ers (6-4) ended nonconference play with a rivalry match against the Toreros (7-4), who they had beaten each of the last three meetings dating back to 2011.

A goal in the 79th minute by San Diego’s Laura Dotson was the difference-maker, as LBSU goalkeeper Kaci McCain couldn’t get to a shot that hit the far post and made its way into the goal.

McCain made four saves total, but the Toreros’ Michelle Craft won the goalkeeper battle with seven saves of her own. The ‘Niners had eleven shots on the night and were led by forward Elizabeth Lyons, who finished with three.

The tight game was representative of how the series has gone, as each game since 2011 has been decided 1-0.

The 49ers will begin Big West Conference play on Friday when they travel to Cal Poly for a 5 p.m. game. They will then had south to UC Santa Barbara for an afternoon game on Sunday.
