‘Niner Notes: Chris Enriquez finishes in 234th at NCAA championships

Women’s volleyball team sweeps black-and-blue rivalry match

The Long Beach State women’s volleyball team swept UC Irvine for the second time this season and recorded its seventh overall sweep Saturday at the Bren Events Center.

LBSU (16-11, 9-5 Big West) erased early deficits in all three sets against the Anteaters (14-14, 5-9) during the 25-21, 25-18 25-23 sweep, charging back after trailing 7-4, 7-5 and 13-10.

The ‘Niners put forth a .250 overall hitting average while limiting UCI to .152 average.  Bre Mackie and Chisom Okpala accounted for the largest part of LBSU’s average as they both hit .500 on the night.

Delainey Aigner-Swesey led The Beach offensively with 12 kills and came up just short of a double-double with nine digs.

The 49ers will now return home next weekend to wrap up their regular season, starting with a match against UC Santa Barbara on Friday before hosting Cal Poly on Saturday.

Chris Enriquez finishes cross country season at the NCAA Championships

Long Beach State cross country runner Chris Enriquez finished 234th Saturday morning at the NCAA Division I Championships in Terre Haute, Ind., being the first 49er in over 25 years to reach the championship.

Enriquez qualified for Saturday’s championship 10k run, where he finished with a time of 32:58, after timing a lifetime-best 29:55 and a 10th place finish at the NCAA West Regional last weekend in Sacramento.

Big West announces ESPN3 broadcast schedule

The Big West Conference revealed its complete schedule of games to be broadcast on EPSN3 this season.

The schedule includes three guaranteed LBSU men’s basketball games and could feature up to six, with the three games in limbo possibly being featured as wild card games picked up by ESPN.

The three guaranteed games to be broadcast will be the 49ers’ matches against UC Riverside on Feb. 8, UC Santa Barbara on Feb. 13 and a rematch home game against UC Riverside on March 8.

ESPN will broadcast at least one LBSU women’s basketball game, which will be when the team hosts UC Davis on Feb. 20. There is a possibility that ESPN could also pick up the team’s game against UC Santa Barbara on Jan. 16.
