Long Beach State softball struggles against top ten teams

Long Beach State softball had a tough outing Tuesday against a pair of top ten teams in the nation.

The 49ers lost to No. 5 Arizona 4-0 and No. 9 Oklahoma 14-0 at LBSU Softball Complex.

The Long Beach State softball team (7-15-1) struggled to take advantage of runners on base against Arizona. They recorded six hits but were unable to get on the board.

In the first game of a doubleheader at the LBSU Softball Complex the 49ers lost the game 4-0 moving their record to 7-14-1 on the season.

The game was scoreless until the top of the 3rd inning, when Arizona’s Mandie Perez hit a two-run home run to take a 2-0 lead.

With no outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the 4th, The Beach failed to score as pinch hitter Tierra Falo struck out to end the inning.

In the top of the 5th, Arizona’s Alyssa Palomino brought in a run with a 1-out single followed by a delayed steal of home plate by Dejah Mulipola, making the score 4-0.

It was the same story in the second game as the 49ers lacked scoring.

Pitcher Mariah Lopez of Oklahoma threw a no-hitter and was making a bid for a perfect game.

It was ruined when returning junior infielder Lauren Lombardi who was coming off an injury, came to pinch-hit and broke the perfect game with a walk.

Adding insult to injury, seven runs were added to the Sooners score in the top of the seventh inning.

The 49ers will look to redeem themselves as they host Texas at the LBSU Complex Wednesday at 2 p.m.
