The Long Beach State women's tennis opened up Big West Conference play with a dominant 7-0 sweep over host Cal State Fullerton on Friday afternoon.
The victory gives the No. 42-ranked 49ers (1-1, 1-0 Big West) 28 consecutive victories in regular-season conference matches dating back to 2007. CSUF (0-4, 0-1 Big West) has now lost to four straight ranked opponents including No. 43 Pepperdine, No. 57 San Diego State and No. 67 San Diego.
The closest threat was a 6-3, 6-1 victory by LBSU senior Deborah Armstrong over CSUF's Malorie dela Cruz in the final singles match of the day at the Titan Courts.
The top two singles players for The Beach — No. 1 Anais Dallara and No. 2 Jaklin Alawi — made quick work of their counterparts. Dallara defeated Tiffany Mai, 6-1, 6-2, while Alawi handled Morgan McIntosh, 6-1, 6-1.
49ers junior Rachel Manasse made her spring debut, defeating Monica Rodriguez 6-0, 6-1 in No. 6 singles action. In No. 4 singles, Anna Jeczmionka won by the same scores over Megan Sandford.
Sophomore Sarah Cantlay picked up a 6-2, 6-1 decision over Karina Akhmedova in No. 5 singles.
LBSU picked up the best-of-three doubles point after winning all three doubles matches.
Cantlay and Julie Luzar started with an 8-1 victory over Akhmedova and dela Cruz at No. 3. The No. 1 tandem of Armstrong and Dallara knocked off Mai and Rodriguez, 8-3. Alawi and Jeczmionka defeated the Titans' No. 2 pairing of McIntosh and Sandford, 8-4.
The 49ers will return to action tomorrow with an 11 a.m. road match at Loyola Marymount.
