Long Beach State men's basketball coach Dan Monson finalized a three-year extension on Tuesday that runs through the 2015-16 season. The 49ers have a 38-56 record overall under Monson in three years.

Long Beach State men's basketball coach Dan Monson signed a three-year contract extension to keep him at The Beach through the 2015-16 season.

Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

"My family and myself are extremely comfortable here, feel very fortunate to work here and just love being a part of Long Beach State and the community," Monson said in a press release. "For an administration to feel the same as far as giving you an extension to stay here, that they believe in you gives you great confidence to do the job.

"My family and I are extremely excited and we can hopefully settle in and concentrate on getting this program where the whole university and community are extremely proud and hopefully bring some championships."

Monson signed a six-year contract worth approximately $200,000 per year back in 2007, as reported by the Daily 49er.

"Dan has done a terrific job of building a strong foundation for the basketball program, and uninterrupted leadership is critical for long term success," Long Beach State athletic director Vic Cegles said a press release. "He has become an integral part of the community and we are pleased to have a renewed commitment to the 49ers and our pursuit of championships and national recognition."

LBSU has gone 38-56 (21-24 Big West Conference) in Monson's three seasons as head coach. Monson struggled to a 6-25 record (3-13 Big West) in his first season in control of The Beach, its second-worst record since 1985.

Seasons two and three proved to be a drastic improvement as Long Beach State finished both campaigns tied for second in the conference. Overall, Monson is 208-179 in 12 years as a Division I head coach including stints at Minnesota and Gonzaga, with seven trips to the NCAA Tournament and one Elite Eight appearance.

"It's really good," guard Larry Anderson said. "I know from his point of view and his family's point of view that they really like it out here.

"He's changed the program since he's been here."

Monson has had success recruiting in his years at LBSU. Anderson, Casper Ware, T.J. Robinson and Eugene Phelps — all part of Monson's first recruiting class — each earned Big West Conference Player of the Week honors last season. As sophomores in 2010, Robinson was named to the All-Big West first-team while Ware was selected to the second-team. LBSU's 2008 recruiting class was ranked No. 10 among mid-majors by ESPN.com and 2009's class was even more impressive with a No. 6 ranking.

The team's nonconference schedule was one of the toughest in the nation last season, as it featured five teams ranked in the top 25, including Texas, Kentucky (with 2010 NBA Draft No. 1 overall selection John Wall), West Virginia (Final Four appearance) and the National Champion Duke Blue Devils. Although the 49ers failed to beat any ranked opponents last season, they defeated UCLA for the first time in program history.

"He's not going to leave me anytime soon," Anderson joked. "We're just glad and excited that he's going to be here for the long run."
