Frisbee goes ultimate this summer

Cal State Long Beach’s Ultimate Frisbee Club will host a summer tournament in conjunction with the city of Long Beach on June 23 and 24.

According to the team’s coach William Harris, a coach for the team, the club, which consists of both a male and a female team, will host the Huckit Long Beach Tournament in Belmont Shore. Harris said approximately 20 teams from California and Arizona are expected to attend the two-day event.

The club is currently in the process of finding sponsors for the tournament, but it is expected that it will have three to four big sponsors. Harris said possible sponsors include the Belmont Brewing Company and area bike shops.

The teams ended their regular season at the Ultimate Players Association Southwest Regionals on May 5 and 6 in Scottsdale, Ariz. Although neither team continued to the national level, Harris said they were proud to have made it to the regionals and broken seed.

According to the tournament records, the men’s team, the CSULB Stalkers, came in with a 14th place seed out of 16 teams and beat Caltech to tie for 13th place with UCLA. The women’s team, No Regrets, came in with a 15th place seed out of 16 teams took 13th, according to Harris.

The tournament will give CSULB Ultimate Frisbee the opportunity to say goodbye to four seniors: Co-captain Adam Raty, Trevor Smith, Brandon Ulm and Tim Siregar.

Ultimate Frisbee has developed a lot of interest since its debut on campus two years ago. The CSULB Stalkers have grown to more than 30 members in two years, and No Regrets boasts approximately 20 team members in its inaugural year. In addition, Harris said Club Sports and Recreation will be adding an intramurals section on Thursday nights in the fall of 2007, and a new class (Kinesiology 198) will offer students the chance to play Ultimate Frisbee for college credit.
