Jimmy Eat World: 90’s throwback makes a comeback

The band that wrote the soundtrack to your teenage rebellion is still rocking on; Jimmy Eat World released their new single “Get Right” on Aug. 21.

The band says the song will be the lead single on a new album set to debut on Oct. 21, and is available to download free from Jimmy Eat World’s official website.

Unfortunately, the song that is described by Alterock — an online music magazine — as a “high-energy track,” was actually a little lack-luster.

The guitar sound was more hard rock than expected, with higher levels of distortion and treble than their previous hits. However, the tempo was too slow to be considered “high energy.”

The new song was repetitive; it had no instrumental breaks or guitar solos. The bass was essentially absent. After 13 years, Jim Adkins’ vocals are still on point, but there are no harmony tracks, altogether leaving the song boring.

The band, which formed in ‘93, first stole the hearts of pop-punk fans when they released their third album “Bleed American” in 2001. The album contained hit singles such as “Sweetness” and “The Middle,” which made it to the number five spot on Billboard Hot 100.

Frankly, “Get Right” does not compare to these throwback favorites that can still be heard on the radio today.

Since “Bleed American,” Jimmy Eat World has released four more albums that failed to get such wide-spread recognition. The band released their last album “Damages” in 2013, and has been absent from the music world until now.

With a tour in motion to present the record live around the globe, Jimmy Eat World is on the cuff of an aspiring comeback.

However, If “Get Right” is the best this new album has to offer than Jimmy Eat World will struggle to return to their former glory.
