According to the United Nations, the world population is estimated at 7 billion humans today. The birth of a child may indicate the celebration of life, but don’t forget that the dead are also honored on the 31st. To set the mood for Halloween, formerly known as the holiday for harvest time and honoring of the dead, here are some of the famous deaths in the last century. Take that 27th Club!

The magician, born as Erik Weisz, died of gangrene and peritonitis after his appendix ruptured. He was known for his escapist tricks, which included his first buried alive stunt near Santa Ana, Calif. in 1915. Poof! And just like that, he’s gone.

His film La Dolce Vita popularized the term paparazzi after photojournalist Paparazzo (Walter Santesso). Cut!
