ASI Senate

In an attempt to ensure the best possible resolution is adopted, the Associate Students, Inc. Senate once again postponed a final decision on the Textbook Rental Program.

Proposed amendments to the tentative program urging the 49er Shops to establish “reasonable practices” and adequate guidelines were discussed at Wednesday’s ASI Senate meeting.

The Senate suggested that guidelines be established to outline proper care for books, deadlines for returns and fees before a final vote is made.

While ASI Senate works toward the best possible resolution, the campus bookstore and University Library sent out flyers to professors, inviting them to inquire whether their textbooks will be eligible for Spring 2009, when the program will be implemented. ASI Vice President Christopher Chavez says that although approval from the ASI Senate and ASI Academic Senate would be the “politically correct” thing to do, their approval is not required for 49er Shops, Inc. to move forward with the program.

Next week’s meeting should bring a final vote regarding the Textbook Rental Program.

The Clean Beach Initiative was voted on and approved by the Senate on Wednesday.  This initiative implements many new policies for the university, the most important being that all future construction ASI approves must meet, at minimum, the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver Certification.

As a result of the Clean Beach Initiative, a committee on environmental policy will be developed.  This committee will responsible for drawing up environmentally sound policies that ASI will adopt if approved.
