Presidential search committees to meet on campus Friday

The committees searching for Cal State Long Beach’s next president will meet Friday in the Barrett Athletic Administration Center to narrow the candidate pool.

Members of the Trustees’ Committee for the Selection of the President (TCSP) and the Advisory Committee to the TCSP will hold the closed meeting, Cal State University Spokesman Mike Uhlenkamp said.

Uhlenkamp said that the CSU relies heavily on the advisory committee to keep the search informed on what qualities CSULB needs in its next president.

The number of candidates, eliminations or planned candidate visits to campus remains unknown, Uhlenkamp said.

The presidential search should end in January 2014, but Uhlenkamp said that although this is the goal, the ongoing presidential search is an “organic” process in which the timeline is determined by the careful selection of candidates.

For example, if a candidate is chosen for the position and the candidate declines, the search committees will return to the beginning of the selection process to choose another candidate from a nationwide pool, he said.

This is one of a few contributing factors that could slow down the CSULB presidential search process, Uhlenkamp said.

After former CSULB President F. King Alexander departed in May, then Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs Donald Para was selected in July to step in as interim president.

Members for the TCSP and ACTCSP were selected in July, and since then, the committees have visited campus once to hear from faculty, staff and students what they would like to see in the next president.

Campus members can also send their input to the search committee through a webpage created by the CSU, csulb.edu/president/search/.

The meeting will be held Friday at the BAAC from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
