Long Beach homeless man arrested during a bike theft at Parkside College

A local homeless man was arrested for allegedly stealing a bicycle from the Parkside College bicycle racks on Jan. 15, according to a University Police press release.

Steven Eric Davis, 32, was already suspected in connection with a theft that occurred in May, University Police Lt. Richard Goodwin said.

He added that the investigation is ongoing.

According to the press release, Community Service Officers (CSO) observed suspicious activity from Davis in the outdoor areas of Parkside College around 9 p.m.

The CSOs then notified University Police that a bicycle theft was in progress, according to the press release.

Goodwin said University Police apprehended Davis, who was in possession of a 14-inch bolt cutter.

Davis was arrested and transported by the University Police to the Long Beach City Jail, Goodwin said.

On Jan. 17, University Police detectives filed a felony complaint against Davis with the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office for the bicycle theft and possession of burglary tools, according to the press release.

“I’m not certain of the number of bikes this individual has stolen,” Goodwin said.

Goodwin said that since Davis is a suspect of a prior bicycle theft, both cases have been “married” into one case.

Two University Police detectives were scheduled for subpoenas in Davis’s case Monday, he said.

Goodwin said students should use a dependable bicycle lock, such as a U-lock, and to avoid leaving their bicycles unattended for long periods of time.

Cal State Long Beach saw a rise in bicycle thefts last year, which has heightened awareness of suspicious activity, according to the press release.

University Police encourages people to call 911 to report a crime in progress or call the non-emergency University Police Department phone number at (562) 985-4101 to report any suspicious activity.
