LBCC student injured in car accident near CSULB

A Long Beach City College student was injured in a multiple car collision going westbound on the intersection of Atherton Street and Merriam Way on Thursday, Long Beach Police Department officers said.

At 5:42 p.m., LBPD responded to a report of the accident involving a blue Toyota Corolla, a black BMW, a blue Toyota Camry and a pick-up truck, LBPD officer Keith Mortensen said.

LBPD arrived at the scene around 6 p.m., Mortensen said.

LBCC student Celeste Montoya, 26, driving the Corolla, rear-ended an African American woman driving the BMW, who did not want to be named, Mortensen said.

“I was sitting at the light, and I got rear-ended,” the woman said.

The woman had her three children in her car, but no one in the vehicle was injured, Mortensen said.

Mortensen said that Montoya told paramedics her hip was injured in the accident. She limped as she approached the paramedics.

Montoya’s mother, Denise Montoya, 64, said that her daughter was transported to the Long Beach Community Hospital.

The blue Toyota Camry received “minor” damage to its rear bumper while the pick-up truck received no damage, Mortensen said.

“For us, and for everyone else, it is a pretty traumatic accident,” Mortensen said.

Cal State Long Beach police appeared at the scene for assistance a few minutes after LBPD arrived.

“It’s my fourth accident for the day,” Mortensen said.
