Bench Press contest begins the Fourth Annual Power-Lifting Competition next Wednesday

The fourth annual Student Recreation and Wellness Center Power-Lifting competition will kick off with a Bench Press Contest on Wednesday, Oct. 8, in the Main Gym A inside the SRWC.

Competitors will have the opportunity to sign up this Wednesday at the SRWC desk, fitness desk attendant Antonio Stephenson said. Stephenson said the SRWC employees will weigh competitors in on Oct. 7.

According to the event’s website, the purpose of this weigh-in is to place contestants into a weight class. “There are six male weight classes and three female weight classes,” the website stated.

During the Bench Press Contest, contestants will be called into their weight class and will be given three opportunities to press the heaviest weight they can over the course of the two hours, according to the website.

The male and female winners who press the largest amount will each receive a 2014 Bench Press Champion trophy; prizes will also awarded for every individual weight class, according to the website.

Daniel Esquer, membership services employee for the SRWC, said he watched the competition last year. He said there was “a good amount of people there, about 20 guys, and girls, about 10 to 15.”

The spectators will sit in a stadium-style stand while the contestants sit on a different stand, Esquer said. He said five bench-press stations will be set up for the competition.

The Bench Press Contest is the first in a series of three power-lifting competitions. A dead lift competition will follow; it will take place on Nov. 7, and the squat competition will take place on Dec. 5.

Spectators are free to come and go as they please during the two-hour competition for the Bench Press Contest from 4 p.m. till 6 p.m. The Dead Lift Contest will run from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on, and the Squat Contest from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
